Shimano recommends replacing shifter cables on a regular, annual basis to prevent the cable end from shearing off.

Same here Rapunzel. They can be scary out on a ride if you’re up a bridge or crossing a causeway between islands and you are the tallest object.

We grease cables upon installation or assembly on most bikes. I am on the coast, my county is 60% salt water and there is salt in the air. The exceptions are high end cable sets.

I have that Bike Repair app on my iPod Touch. I don’t use it too much, but it is worth the money for refreshing the brain after overhauling 2000 beach bikes in a row.
BTW: excellent app if you know bikes.

Spring is coming. I’m assembling new bikes instead of overhauling old bikes.

Always nice assembling new bikes and not trying to hash an old one back from the dead. The challenge of resurrecting the old is always a great skill to maintain though :)

Only a fellow cyclist would understand how one could get home from the hospital and turn out and head out for a (albeit easy) bike ride, a day later. ;)
