WEnt from. 90mm stem to an 80mm stem today on the 29er and it made a HUGE difference. So much more responsive front end, almost 26”-esque.

I also rode with with some who was on the second season of Survivor whose married to a former World Cup downhiller. And yes, she agreed to be on the podcast!!!

Tire question, if I run 29×1.75’s with a minimal tread pattern, can I reduce the psi so I get better traction in loose corners? I’ve also got some 29×2.1 crossmarks I can run as well.

Would the Maxxis tires be better on the Stan’s wheels that I’ve got?

    • Al, At your weight you should run about 18 front and 24 rear on the 29er. What have you been running?

    • Great comment and question Gary.
Al, depending on where and what conditions you are riding in/on I would suggest the 2.1′s would give you better feel. Sounds like you are after the fastest tyre you can use though :) What are the 1.75 tyres you mention?

The Maxxis Crossmarks are a pretty quick tyre with good rolling resistance and good cornering…[Read more]

Slicker’n pigeon shit through loose turns but pretty fast everywhere else.

    • Now, they are very slick looking tyres :) and with a little less pressure they may corner better than on pigeon poo :)

Is it the front or rear tyre you are losing through the corners Al?

    • Rear, tips?

      • Try turning the tyre around so the tread runs the opposite direction, sounds crazy I know but through experience and trial and error I have found it not always best to fit as suggested by the manufacturer.
Give it a shot and let me know if it changes anything.

    • Get some real tires AL! I found two great light weight combo’s.

      1) Specialized Renegade Rear with a Specialized Fast Trak LK front.
Used these to will all my races in 2011, great combo and light weight.

      2) Schwalbe Racing Ralphs front and rear.

    • Nice call on the Racing Ralphs Gary, a few people and customers I see use them and swear by them and yeah Al I am with Gary on running such small tyres?Never had much luck running narrow tyres, I tend to stick to 2.0-2.2 depending on conditions. Tyres are not somewhere you want to save weight, find something that works and stick with it :) ”Literally”

I got an 80mm stem tonight to replace my 90mm. Left the flat bar on, and inverted the stem. Hopefully I will get a little more control in the front end.

    Thanks for the advice!!!

    • I went to a 70mm stem and a 120mm fork, it fixed the high speed twitchiness that I didn’t like.

    • Great to hear Al and hope you feel and ride faster with better cornering :)

Gary, did you find the weight bias over the front wheel was reduced thus improving your control. The 70mm stem would have quickened your steering but the increased rake and trail of the 120mm fork would certainly slow the front end twitchiness :)
