Is anyone out there experiencing a post weekend ride hangover right now like I am? Let’s see. On Saturday, I managed 4hrs and 40 mins of seat time split up between 2 different group rides and the ride back to the house for a grand total of 87 miles or so. On Sunday, it was about the same, although more condensed with only one five minute stop for liquid nourishment. Total ride time for the weekend was about 9.5 hours. Given my average speed was about 19mph and I was more or less riding solo the whole time (off to the side of the group or well behind it) I was burning about 800 to 900 calories per hour. Total calorie expenditure for the weekend including basal calories was about 11,275.
So now Monday comes along and this is when my body realizes I’ve short changed it by about 2,000 to 3,000 calories. I just can’t eat that much on Saturday or Sunday. I’m constantly hungry. I just ate lunch and I’m already thinking about food. Then, right about now, my legs start to realize what’s been done to them as well. It starts off as a little fatigue in the morning, but by noon which is about now, I want to take a seat and stay there for the rest of the day. If I was smart I’d get on the trainer tonight for 30 minutes to spin out some of the junk in there, but instead I’ve got guests coming into town for the holiday.
I love the ‘base building’ season as this is what I look forward to every Monday for the next 6 weeks or so. It’s amazing I sign up for this routine every year. You gotta love it!
